The Indian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actor Sabu, who passed away peacefully at his Mumbai residence early Monday morning. He was 76.
Born in 1949, Sabu carved a special place in the hearts of audiences with his iconic performances across a variety of genres. Known for his deep voice, expressive acting, and humble off-screen personality, Sabu was regarded as one of the most versatile actors of his time. He appeared in over 150 films, spanning Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam cinema, and was particularly admired for his roles in socially impactful dramas and family films.
According to family sources, Sabu had been dealing with age-related health complications for several months. Despite a decline in health, he remained active in community events and often shared messages of gratitude to his fans through social media and interviews.
Tributes began flooding in shortly after the news broke. Prominent figures from the film world, including directors, co-stars, and younger actors, expressed their grief and recalled fond memories of working with the seasoned star.
“An era has ended. Sabu sir was not just a brilliant actor but a mentor to many of us. His dedication, punctuality, and grace will never be forgotten,” said noted filmmaker Rakesh Mehra.

Fans gathered outside his residence to pay their respects, with many carrying posters of his memorable roles. A small prayer service was held by the family, with a public memorial expected to take place in the coming days.
Sabu’s breakthrough came in the early 1970s with the film Deep Roots, which established him as a lead actor. Over the decades, he evolved with the times—taking on character roles, mentoring newcomers, and even serving as a guest lecturer at several acting schools.
In recognition of his contribution to cinema, Sabu received numerous accolades including the National Film Award for Lifetime Achievement and several state honors.
He is survived by his wife Latha, two children, and four grandchildren. His family issued a brief statement thanking the public for their love and support:
“We are grateful for the immense love shown by everyone. Sabu lived a life full of passion and purpose, and we request privacy as we honor his journey.”
The final rites will be held in his native town of Thrissur, Kerala, where he will be laid to rest beside his parents.
